If you do go the Photoshop route, use the 'save for Web' function. lot's of options where you see the results before saving.

Because of the time and effort expended to write instructions like this, I must copyright them.  Thanks for understanding. They will be included in the eBook I am writing.

------------------------------------------

The following instructions are Copyright 2007 by Kathy Steres.  They may be printed for your own personal use but may not be printed, copied, reproduced for any reason; nor distributed electronically or in any other fashion for any reason at any time without prior written permission.  Figures are screen images captured from Photoshop (c) by Adobe.

1. Open your image

2. Choose File, Save for Web

3. In the options area, "Preset", change GIF to JPEG

4. Look in lower left corner of the window to see the file size.

5  Then click the options Image Tab
     (see (5) in image above)
The image tab looks like this:

6.  To change the visual size of the image, change your longest side
     to 500 or less.

7.  Choose Quality to Bicubic Sharper (when sizing smaller).
[Note: In CS2  &Up, use Bicubic Smoother if going larger].

8.  Click Apply. The image area will display the size the image
will appear when when uploaded to the internet --
also note the change in file size in lower left corner.

(I recommend redoing Step 6 until the image is approx 3"x5" or less)

9.  Click Save....
     Type in a file name
Change the 'Save as file type' to Images Only',
     Leave 'Settings' set to Default,
     Click Save
